Physical Days 2020
Partner workshop mit/with Zoe Gyssler und/and Shafiki Sseggayi
(Johannes Wieland Repertoire)
Partnering Workshop with Zoe Gyssler and Shafiki Sseggayi.
We will begin with a warmup class that intergrates elements from floorwork, guided improvisation and gymnastics to awaken first the individual use of body weight, momentum, strength and stamina. Once warmed up, we will progress into working with a partner. We will use different partnering exercises, that focus on themes like sharing weight, push and pull, action and reaction, and others in order to get to know our partner and ourselves with the partner. Once we build up trust, we'll start to play with those tools, create own movement material and then learn a highly physical partnering phrase from Johannes Wieland’s production “you will never be my number one fan”. Once we've learned the movement material, we will play with it, by experimenting with different theatrical contexts therefore allowing everyone to find their own interpretation.

Shafiki Sseggayi
Shafiki Sseggayi stole many hearts with his performance in ‘so you think you can dance netherlands’ in 2011. Originally born in a small village in uganda, shafiki learned to play traditional african music and at the age of 15 he moved to the big city of Kampala, where he was exposed to african contemporary dance. Contemporary dance taught him so much about himself and his character - creating in him power, energy and devotion. In Uganda he became a member of several different companies, including Mutumizi dance company, Keiga dance company and Latin flavor Uganda where he both performed and choreographed his own pieces. bringing aspects of himself, african culture and mentality to anyone interested in the dance world is very important to him. Shafiki later moved to the Netherlands in 2011 in order to attend the Amsterdam High School for the Arts; he graduated four years later with a degree from the Urban Contemporary Department. in 2013, he worked with Ultima Vez under Wim Vandekeybus and since 2014 he holds a fixed contract with Johannes Wieland Tanztheater at Staatstheater Kassel.
